« Echoes of the Cypress » invites viewers into a world where emotion, movement, and color converge to form abstract landscapes of memory and sensation. At the heart of this exhibition lies the Iranian cypress tree, a powerful symbol of resilience, spirituality, and transcendence, serving as a bridge between the earthly and the divine.
This composition features imposing, abstract cypress trees enveloped in deep greens and blues, accented with radiant golden ornaments that evoke a mystical energy. The background, painted in warm earthy tones, suggests a celestial atmosphere, reinforcing the tree’s role as a bridge between the earthly and the divine.

Part of « Echoes of the Cypress« , Cypress Hills presents a landscape divided into contrasting hues of cold blues and deep greens on one side and warm golds and fiery oranges on the other,an evocation of the duality of light and shadow.
The layering of acrylic paint, intricate patterns, and golden embellishments creates a sense of depth and movement. The cypress, central to Karbassian’s artistic vision, acts as an Axis Mundi, linking the earthly to the divine, guiding the viewer through a mystical journey, blurring the line between abstraction and nature, the sacred and the temporal.

Sheila Karbassian, born in 1971 in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and raised in California, made a radical life choice by moving to Iran at the age of 12. This transition took place at the height of the Iran-Iraq War and in the years following the 1978 Islamic Revolution, a time when most Iranians were seeking to flee the country.
This deeply transformative journey has shaped her rich and dynamic visual language, reflecting her exploration of identity and existence. Her work powerfully captures the tensions and harmonies between modernity and tradition, weaving together the complexities of a life marked by her status as an immigrant, a woman, a mother, a widow, a survivor of grief, a witness to war, a partner, an Iranian, an American, and ultimately, a multifaceted human being.
